Half Log Siding
Half log siding gives the
look of a regular full log cabin. There are advantages to both methods. The half logs are what are known as a true Swedish coped log cut
lengthwise in half. They give the appearance of full logs and can be used both outside the home and inside the home.
Half log siding can be used on existing homes and are attached to wood, masonry, metal and insulated concrete. What this siding
allows for is for the homeowner to have the appearance of a log home from the outside but a regular dry walled home on the interior. The
siding is attached to a frame that is on the inside of the home.
Half log siding is an attractive alternative to regular full log siding. The half sizes provide an outer layer, pre-finishing and
insulation into one labor and time saving application. Each piece of siding comes with an interlocking edge that is between the courses of
siding. There is also a nailing flange allowing for easy screw fastening or nailing.
Obviously, the half log siding is lighter in weight than full log siding, which makes it easier to work with as well. It really
adds a unique look to any home, especially one in a rural setting. These logs are kiln dried which removes moisture and conditions the logs
for maximum life. Removal of the moisture also removes a good deal of the weight, which is why the logs are quite easy to
handle.
Kiln dried half log siding also provides that an interior finish and exterior finish can be applied much more effectively. In
addition, it enables caulking to be applied right away as well. Kiln drying also helps to identify any logs that may not be good enough for
use on a home. You want your siding to last for many years so only the best logs should be used. White cedar is one of the best woods to
use because it is very durable. However, the cost is also higher than other types of wood such as pine. Nevertheless, a better type of wood
could last longer as well.
If you have always wanted a traditional log home but have never considered half log siding, you may be in for a surprise. Do some
research and spend some time looking it over before making your final decision. Many people prefer this style to the full log style because
of the ability to keep your interior walls dry walled.
