Making Roman Shades
If you are looking to replace your old curtains
then roman shades are a good choice. They are a simple window treatment that keeps out the bright
sun and keeps people from peeking in your windows. These shades are much nicer than putting up cheap plastic blinds. You can find these common window coverings at most home improvement centers and hardware stores. If you can
spend a little more money then you can have them custom made to your exact dimensions. An interior designer can arrange this or simply by
placing an order with a store that provides this service.
If you are willing to make your own roman shades
then this can be done as well. The first step is to measure the height and width of the window inside the frame if you want the shade to cover
the window only. If you want the shade to cover part of the frame then measure the entire surface you want covered. To determine the number of
dowels needed, divide the height of the window by up to six to nine inches. This
is the distance between each dowel. The height of each dowel is one and a half inches, so keep this in mind when making your
calculations.
You will need to add an additional six inches or
so of fabric to mount the shade properly. Therefore, besides the actual length of fabric needed, you will need to compensate for each dowel
and for the mounting. Add an extra couple of inches to the width as well. Once the measurements are calculated, it is time to choose a fabric.
Choose a color that is not too bright and loud. You want the roman shades to blend into the room, not shout at you when you enter the
room.
Besides fabric, you will need a blind cord,
window cleat, dowels, mounting board, shade rings, screw eyes, pencil and a yardstick. This should cover your list of supplies. When you
purchase your fabric, check with the store to see if they have a set of instructions for making roman blinds. If not, there should be a set
available on the internet.
