Painting Aluminum Siding
Painting aluminum siding
on old houses was always a problem because it was hard to get the paint to stick. The problem was the chalking of the paint, if you ran your
hand along the siding it would be covered in the chalky paint. Oxidation of the paint is why this happened. Older vinyl siding was also a
problem as it faded under sunlight causing it to become rather unsightly.
When it comes to painting aluminum siding, you do not want the paint to peel or wipe off a few months later. To overcome this
problem with older vinyl and aluminum siding you must clean and prepare the surface first. To clean the siding, you will need a
high-powered pressure washer. It must be powerful enough to remove all or most of the chalky old paint and dirt.
To remove the old paint you will need to hold the pressure wand fairly close to the surface. If you want to use a cleaner on the
outside surface, use a product like TSP; it is good for removal of mold, mildew and other stubborn dirt. Rinse it completely off when
finished. Before painting aluminum siding or vinyl siding, you must allow it to dry for several days.
One point to note if you are re-painting a vinyl surface, it may require a surface de-glosser as well. This solvent will help
remove the shine off the surface and help the first coat of paint stick better. To help the paint bond to the surface you may add an
additive called an emulsa bond to your first coat. Painting aluminum siding is best done with an airless sprayer. You can probably rent one
at a tool rental store because you really do not need to buy one.
If you use a high quality latex paint for painting aluminum siding you will not require a primer. Add the bonding agent directly
to the paint for your first coat. If you are going to use a primer then add the bonding agent to the primer. You can never go wrong by
using a primer. If you are unsure of the exact steps to take, you can always contact your local paint supply store and they should be able
to answer any questions you may have.
